Elite men podium, Simon Uppill, Tim Robertson, Matt Crane

The Australian sprint championships were held today in the hallowed grounds of Canberra Grammar School. Although this was the first time an orienteering event was held there, the school has produced many fine orienteers including current Orienteering President, Blair Trewin.

A large contingent of New Zealanders were present and two of their very best in Lizzie Ingham & Tim Robertson took out victory in the elites. Although based in Canberra for the last year, Lizzie, who placed a fine 12th in this year’s WOC sprint, certainly hadn’t been on the grounds of Grammar before. Despite just resuming from an injury induced spell Lizzie navigated superbly to take the win from Rachel Effeney (QLD) and Hanny Allston (TAS). It was pleasing to see Rachel gracing the podium again as she has been unable to race much this year due to work commitments. Hanny is well and truly back on the orienteering scene, after a 4 year hiatus, and is improving with every race.

Tim Robertson is a truly classy sprint competitor, with a bronze medal from the Junior Worlds this year amongst his credits. Thus it was no surprise to see him take the victory today, but it was only a narrow 6 second margin to Matt Crane (ACT), with Simon Uppill (SA) a further 30 seconds back. With fields of 40 in the women’s elite and 49 in the men’s there was definitely plenty of competition.

History was made in the junior elite classes when Western Australian athletes won both. Oscar McNulty (M20) displayed his liking for speed with a 39 second win over Olle Poland (ACT), with Kiwi Nick Smith third. It should be noted that both the senior and junior elites had exactly the same courses, and Oscar’s time would have placed him 4th in the senior race. Oscar’s younger brother Henry also did well in placing 6th. Markéta Novotná (WA) had a narrow 5 second victory over the ever consistent Queenslander Heather Muir, with another Kiwi, Vida Fox in third.

Senior Elites Junior Elites
15.04 Tim Robertson 15.57 Oscar McNulty
15.10 Matt Crane 16.36 Olle Poland
15.45 Simon Uppill 16.51 Nick Smith
15.16 Lizzie Ingham 18.33 Marketa Novotna
16.07 Rachel Effeney 18.38 Heather Muir
16.12 Hanny Allston 18.46 Vida Fox

NATIONAL JUNIOR SQUADS selected & Training Camp dates announced

JUNIOR TRAINING CAMPS

Given that many juniors will be busy orienteering in New Zealand over January the national training camp format is slightly different this year.

The January camp, which will be in Canberra, will start from Friday 25th Jan until the evening of Monday 28th January, utilising the long weekend.   This camp is open to ALL JUNIORS from 14 -20 years who have shown they can orienteer on moderate to hard courses.  (No beginners.)   Applications are welcome from individual athletes and state associations are also urged to prompt suitable juniors.

Participants would have to arrive on the Friday morning before 1pm and depart in the evening of Monday 28th.   Local orienteers might be able to accommodate those from far away for longer.

There will be a post Easter camp from Wed April 3rd to Sat April 6th in Victoria following the Easter 3 Day held in Bendigo.   Arrive in Creswick Wed. am and depart Sat. pm.  Again this camp is open to all juniors from 14-20years of a competent standard.   If interstate participants require a bed with locals on the Monday & Tuesday nights, that should be able to be arranged.  Note that this week is school holidays only for Queensland.   Nominations for this camp will be called at a later date.

Interested athletes in the January Camp should email the camp manager, Valerie Barker (vnwb@internode.on.net) to reserve their spot.   The camp will be led by Valerie and Roch Prendergast (JWOC coach), who are both trained teachers and accredited coaches.   There will be some cost to the camp, but it will also be subsidised by Orienteering Australia.

Coaches and elite athletes who would like to assist at either camp should contact Roch (prenderg@tpg.com.au) asap.  Accommodation costs will be able to be paid for those who assist.

It is really worth-while having coaches from different states contribute to national camps and they also learn from each other.   It may be possible to subsidise a flight for a coach from an outer state.  If you would like OA to consider this please copy the HP Manager Kay Haarsma, (kayhaarsma@hotmail.com) into your email to Roch.

New Official appointments for Australian teams in New Zealand.

Australian Teams in January New Zealand 2013

Kim Nankervis (Tasmania) will be the official team manager for the Australia v New Zealand challenge team in NZ in January 2013.  Her role will be in co-ordinating relay teams and general trouble shooting.  With 4 events being part of the challenge there may be injuries, and Kim is the one that will need to know.  Look for her at the Australian “embassy”- where the Aussie flags are flying.

Team O tops will be distributed at the Christmas 5 Days (for those attending) by Kay Haarsma or Kim, and the remainder will go with Kim to NZ.

With the World Cup team involving 22 elites it was thought necessary to appoint a third official to assist WOC coaches Tom Quayle and Wendy Read.  This position was advertised and had a number of suitable applicants, with Ben Rattray being appointed.  Ben is an ACT resident but runs for his “state of origin,” South Australia.

The Schools Test team sees Valerie Barker (ACT) and Ian Dalton (WA) as the official “team” in charge.

Marquita Gelderman takes trifecta of Aussie MTBO titles

National Mountain Bike Championship weekend

The final race in the Australian MTBO titles saw riders return to Kiwarrak state forest for the middle distance championships.  Again there was a maze of single track to challenge the navigational skills of even the best riders.

New Zealand’s Marquita Gelderman again reigned supreme in women’s elite to take out a trifecta of wins.  However fellow Kiwi Christine Browne, a relative newcomer to MTBO rode well to finish just 4 minutes behind, with Carolyn Jackson holding onto third narrowly from the rapidly improving Jenny Enderby.

Men’s elite saw an exciting race with veteran Aussie rep Alex Randall having a narrow 50 second win over NSW’s Steven Todkill, who is better known for his foot o exploits. Steven had an impressive carnival winning the sprint and finishing 2nd behind Alex in the other 2 races.  WA’s Ricky Thackray again had to be content with third, but that result secured him the M21 National League title for the secong year running.

There were four other riders who won all three titles on offer over the weekend.  These were: Gabrielle Withers (W14), Chris Firman (M20), Peter Swanson (M40) and Graeme Cadman (M80).

Chris Firman perhaps was the most dominant rider of the carnival, excelling in all the variable terrain.  It was a Queensland trifecta in the junior boys in the middle with Chris winning by 8 minutes from Karl withers and Paulo Jun Alvear Fujii.   In the junior girls Sally-Anne Hendersen (NSW) took her second win of the carnival.

Other age group winners were: Georgie Withers (W14); Tasmin Barnes (W40); Jacqui Sinclair (W50); Peta Whitford (W60); Yett Gelderman (W70); Eddie Prentice (M14); Peter Swanson (M40); Robert Prentice (M50); Bruce Meder (M60); Keith Wade (M70); Graeme Cadman (M80)

Many thanks to David West for his amazing co-ordination of this 3 day carnival of races, and to the Mountain Devils members and other volunteers who made the events run smoothly.  The large Kiwi contingent of 17 riders had plenty of praise for the races and like every rider, thought that the single tracks in Kiwarrak Forest produced one of the finest maps they had ridden on.

Results are available on the event website at: ausmtbochampsRoute Gadget showing the great areas and courses are also now available on that website.

The National League elite winners for 2013 were Ricky Thackray (WA) and Jenny Enderby (NSW) with NSW winning the state title.  Age group winners will be announced shortly.

There will be two MTBO events in conjunction with the Christmas 5 Days, in the Beechworth area.   There also will be a MTBO training camp during this time – interested people should contact Kay Haarsma on kayhaarsma@hotmail for more details.

In 2013 the JWOC/ WOC selection trials will be in Victoria in April and the National titles will be in Queensland in July.  The Kiwis have also announced that they will host another week long carnival in January 2014, based on the North Island.
