Selection Process for Australian Team to compete at MTBO WOC 2009
 1.      The selection will be for up to 8 riders (total) for both Men’s and Women’s Team.
Selectors will use the three ‘picks’ system as a priority order.

·    Pick A:     A maximum of 2 riders chosen with regard to all relevant performances, including previous WOC’s.

·    Pick B:    A minimum of one rider, and maximum of 2 riders, chosen purely on their performance at the trials.

·    Pick C:    One rider chosen at the selectors’ sole discretion

 2. A Minimum of 2 MTBO races will be held at act as selection trials. The races will be held early enough to arrange travel and time off, but late enough to be an accurate gauge of form.

The races used will be:

• To check the performance of those being considered for Pick A
• To allow up to 2 riders to self-select as provided for by Pick B
• To add to the information the Selectors have about the other riders in consideration for Pick C.

3. Attendance at the trials is not necessary to be considered for selection.  However,

• Failure to attend any of the trials will make you only eligible for consideration in Pick C.
• Finishing only one of the trials ( including when due to mechanical breakdown) will make it more difficult for the Selectors to compare your performance to the others when considering those eligible for both Pick A and Pick B.

4. All riders wishing to be considered for the Men’s and Women’s Team must:

• inform the Selectors of the ‘Expression’ of Interest’ by email or written application.
• inform the Selectors prior to the selection trials (at the very latest) that they are both available and are willing to travel.
• be current members of their State Orienteering Association and local Orienteering club.
• be Australian Citizens.

5. The following grounds will preclude any riders from consideration for the Australian MTBO WOC Team:
·         Failure to comply with any aspect of the OA Drug’s Policy.
·         Where it is believed the inclusion of a rider will be detrimental to the combined spirit of the Australian Team, and thereby have a negative impact on other riders’ performance.

Australia’s outdoor adventure magazine, Outer Edge, has a special Orienteering feature in its latest edition. Editor Pat Kinsella spent three days watching the action at the Australian Championships Carnival in Maryborough, Queensland. Kinsella presents the sport from an outsiders perspective, and shows the many positive attributes of the sport we love. Look at for it in the news stands today.

The Level 2 Coaching Workshop will be held in Canberra on January 31st and February 1st. The workshop will be led by experienced Level 3 coach Paul Pacqué. Paul has many years experience in all facets of orienteering including coaching the Australian JWOC team and Junior Squad for many years.

The course willl be held at the Carotel Motel in North Canberra. This will mean that the accommodation and sessions will be at the same location. The workshop will be run from 9am Saturday until 4pm Sunday and will include a Saturday night session. Transport will not be required during the weekend and transfers to and from the airport will be arranged.

States are asked to help encourage and provide funding for participants attending. The cost of accommodation will be subsidised by OA, however a small cost may charged. This will be kept to the minimum amount possible.

Anyone wishing to attend should contact Dave Meyer by December 26th.

Adrian Jackson, our present middle distance world champion in MTBO, again demonstrated his outstanding fitness by winning the elite MTBA National Round Crosscountry event on the Gold Coast on Nov 31.  In very hot and wet conditions AJ maintained  great consistency in his laps and had a 2 minute margin after completing the course in 1hr53 mins.   He competes again at National Round 3 on Dec 13th at the You Yangs in Victoria.

In other MTB news…
Quite a few orienteers were amongst the 530 riders competing in the annual Urban Polaris on Dec 7th.  This is a 7 hour score type event taking riders in pairs through the entire Canberra region.   MTBO Coach Kay Haarsma showed her cunning to place 2nd in the super-vets with 410 points and 20th overall from 265 teams, with her partner Robert Adam.  Other prominent results were: Robert Prentice, (400 points) 2nd in the mixed; Joshua Roberts and Jamie van Netten (370 points) were 20th in open men (39th overall) John Scown (360 points) was 3rd in supervets; Ann Scown was 4th in vet women; Mace Neve 7th in open women; Nic Plunkett-Cole  8th in open women, and Paul and Vicki Haynes were 8th in the supervets.

Following the first day of the Annual OA Conference delegates from the states joined the OA Board in the OA Challenge. Given the conference was being within the ANU, it was the natural setting for the most important event on the orienteering calender. Two hagaby style courses gave an opportunity for some head-to-head racing which produced some good battles. Construction and locked gates frustrated some of the competitors but all enjoyed the afternoon tour of the ANU.

The field was strong in the Long course with 4 males in the top 20 competing. Some visiting SILVA NOL competitors also attended for some quality training which added to the buzzing atmosphere. Predictably Julian Dent destroyed the field but given he was not a conference attendee he attracted the standard 1hr time penalty. This gave Eric ‘Ecmo’ Morris the victory ahead of Victorians Bruce ‘Triple Champ’ Arthur and Blair ‘the Human Calculator’ Trewin. Jenny ‘Carn the Arrows’ Casanova was the solo female in the long and showed WA’s John ‘When’s the paddling?’ Toomey how it’s done with a snappy 7 minute margin over him. Andy ‘I’ll pretend to be busy and not compete’ Hogg saw the writing on the wall and did not take part.

OA HP Director, Mike ‘I’ll show the elites how it’s done’ Dowling’, added himself to WOC 2009 middle distance calculations sneaking in ahead of Ian ‘Another bloody trip to the east’ Dalton for a 24 second victory in the short.Christine Brown showed her class and took both third overall and the women’s title. Robin ‘this is a very Special Project’ Uppill was the second female and Liz Bourne third.

Dear Member Federations,

Please find attached the new IOF Anti-Doping Rules. The rules have been revised to be compliant with the new (2009) World Anti-Doping Code. In accordance with the required procedure, the rules have been submitted to WADA for review and approval. WADA has confirmed that the rules are in line with the Code.

The rules are also to be found on the IOF homepage at www.orienteering.org, and hard copies will shortly be circulated to all member federations. WADA’s 2009 World Anti-Doping Code and the new Prohibited List can be downloaded at www.wada-ama.org.

The new IOF A-D rules will come into effect on 1 January 2009.
