2018 National Rankings – non-elite

2018 National Rankings – non-elite

Rankings in non-elite classes have been determined based on results in the Australian 3-Days Championship (31, 32, 33), Australian Championships (AS, AM, AL) and the South Australian Middle Championship (SA).

Points are awarded for each event completed on the basis of 100 points for first place and lesser points for other competitors.

When more than one orienteer in a class has 100 points, the first ranked orienteer is determined by the average of their three best winning margins.

Some points of interest in the 2009 rankings:

1. In four classes two orienteers earned maximum points (separated by winning margins): Matthew Cohen (AL.T), Matthew Patten (EV T); Bruce Arthur (MF.V), Craig Feuerherdt (BG.V); John Scown (AO.A), Tim Ashman (LI.S); Tony Mount (AL.T), Kevin Paine (BS.A).

2. 36 clubs had members in the first three places of their respective classes: AL.T, MF.V, NC.N (7); RR.A (6); BG.V, PO.A (4); BB.N, BF.N, EV.T, TJ.S, UG.Q, UR.N (3); BK.V, BN.N, BO.W, BS.A, SH.N, TT.S, WR.T, YA.S, YV.V (2); AO.A, EN.Q, EU.V, DR.V, GO.N, KO.W, LI.S, NT.N, SO.Q, SW.W, WA.S, WE.A, WH,N, WO.W, WR.N (1).

3. The most successful states for first places were: NSW (10) and Victoria (6).

4. Families with two or more members in the first three places were: McComb (Zali W14, Cathy W45), Enderby (Erika W12, Jennifer W50), Arthur (Sophie W12, Torren M14, Bruce M40), Iskhakova (Ariadna W10, Marina W40), Woolford (Alex M12, Sam M14, Tony M55), Dent (Elye M10, Kathie W35), Key (Milla W12, Warren M55), Gray (Mikaela W16, Ryan M16).

5. Victoria orienteers filled the first 3 placings in the M40 class.

Silva Medal 2018

Silva Medal 2018

The Silva Medal has been won by Jennifer Enderby NC.N for the second time. Congratulations Jennifer.

The Silva Medal competition for 2018 is based on points for participating and placing in the Australian Championships ( Sprint, Middle and Long), the Australian 3-Days Championships (each day considered as a separate event) and the Sourth Australian Middle Distance Championship (Elite and A classes in M/W16 and above). One’s best 6 events counts towards this award.

Points are scored for completing a course as follows: 1st – 4; 2nd – 3; 3rd – 2 and 1 for finishing, 1 point if there are less than 4 starters.
Jennifer won 6 of the 7 events scoring a maximum of 24 points. Marina Iskhakova and Jenny Bourne also won 6 of the 7 events but Jennifer has won on a countback based on average winning margins:

Jennifer Enderby 8.81%

Marina Iskhakova 8.23%

Jenny Bourne 7.40%

Full results are below.

Winners are:
Senior men: Simon Uppill, SA
Senior women: Natasha Key, Vic
U/23 men: Matt Doyle, ACT
U/23 women: Lanita Steer, Vic
Junior men: Aston Key, Vic
Junior women: Tara Melhuish, ACT
Senior men team: Canberra Cockatoos
Senior women team: Victoria
Junior men team: Victoria
Junior women team: Canberra Cockatoos

NOL points update

Today was the penultimate NOL race and the series will be finalised tomorrow with 3 bonus points for the last race.
Victoria has won senior women and has a strong lead in junior men. ACT have won junior women. Senior men will depend on tomorrow’s result. The Cockatoos will need to beat Victoria again to win over them.
Aston Key has defended his title in M20 as has Tara Melhuish in W20.
Simon Uppill did not run today and if the same occurs tomorrow Matt Crane will need to win to take the title in M21 from Simon.
Tash Key is now winning W21 and Krystal Neumann will need a win and a relatively poor result from Tash to take the title from her.
Updated scores can be found here.

2018 Silva Medal – Progressive Scores after Australian Long Distance Championships

  1. 2018 Silva Medal – Progressive Scores after Australian Long Distance Championships

The Silva Medal competition for 2018 is based on points for participating and placing in the Australian Championships ( Sprint, Medium and Long), and the Australian 3-Days Championships (each day considered as a separate event) and the South Australian Championships (Elite and A classes in M/W16 and above).

Points are scored for completing a course as follows: 1st4; 2nd3; 3rd2 and 1 for finishing, 1 point if there are less than 4 starters.

One’s best 6 from the above 7 events are used to determine the winner of the Silva Medal.

Progressive scores after the Australian 3 Days, and the Middle, Sprint and Long Distance Championships are published below.

The Statistician normally publishes runners who have amassed 20 points and above, so runners who have not yet acquired 16 points will not be included in the final list.

In recent years there has usually been a number of runners who have scored maximum points (24) in 6 of the events. A countback system based on winning margins is used to determine the winner.

It is probable that the winner will come from the list below. Of course if enough runners on the list fail to score significant points in the remaining event then others not on this short list could appear in the final list.

Jennifer Enderby is the only orienteer to have won all 5 relevant events conducted to date. However, as orienteers can discard their worst result others can still win the Silva Medal.

The list contains the following previous winners:

  • Jennifer Enderby (nee Anderson) CC.N 1986

  • Warren Key MF.V 2013

  • Aston Key MF.V 2015

  • Ann Ingwersen PO.A 2017

  • Jenny Bourne EU.V 2009, 2012, 2016

The only orienteers who can get the maximum 24 points are:

Jenny Bourne

Jennifer Enderby

Marina Iskhakova.

Of course should these runners not win tomorrow then other orienteers come into contention.

NOL Point Scores

National Orienteering League points have been updated following the second last weekend of competition. There are two races left to run in the series, and these will be run next weekend.
Victoria have won the senior women’s competition and the Canberra Cockatoos have won junior women. Victoria lead the Cockatoos by three points in senior men and by five points in junior men.
Simon Uppill continues to lead senior men with Matt Crane 14 points behind. In senior women, Krystal Neumann is winning from Tash Key and Belinda Lawford and any of these three could win overall. Aston Key has a strong lead in junior men but Patrick Jaffe has not yet run eight races so could add significantly to his score next weekend. In junior women, Asha Steer leads Tara Melhuish by 12 points and either could win the title.

2018 Australian junior development camp

Orienteering Australia will be holding an Australian junior development camp in Ballarat from December 15-20. The camp is open to all juniors over 14 years of age. It is being led by Brodie Nankervis, the national junior coach. OA Head Coach Jim Russell will be helping host the camp.
Further information on the camp will be posted on the event Facebook page.
The aim is to organise the camp along similar lines to the December 2017 camp in the Canberra region, with states organising travel and accommodation for their athletes and with state coaching scholars attending as well.
