And for the Honour team, every state was represented at least once!

Congratulations to all on their selection.

Australian MTBO challenge team announced..

The Australian v New Zealand MTBO Challenge will take place in conjunction with the Australian MTBO Championships from October 25-27 in Maryborough, Victoria.

New Zealand, as the visiting team, determined that the challenge would be contested over the following 8 classes:     W21; W40; W60; M21; M40; M50; M60; M70.

The challenge will be contested in all 4 Australian Championship competitions – the sprint, middle, long and mass start events.

The scoring system works as follows:

  • The times of the two fastest of the three team riders in each contested class are added to give the team time for the stage.
  • The nation with the lower team time is the winner of the class for that stage.
  • The nation with the most class wins over the four events triumphs.

The full AUS v NZL MTBO Challenge Rules are at the link below.

http://dev.orienteering.asn.au/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/Australia-v-New-Zealand-MTBO-Challenge-Rules-June-2017.pdf

The Australian team to contest the Challenge is very strong, comprising of riders from all states & ACT.

Our M21 team all represented Australia at the elite World Championships in Denmark earlier this year, while Carolyn Jackson (in W21) has just returned victorious from the World Masters Championships last week in Germany.       Andrew Power (NSW) is the Australian team manager.

MTBO Championships

An exciting season culmination awaits MTBO riders with 7 championship events in 10 days possible for those attending both the ACT & Australian Championships.

The ACT MTBO Championships – 18-20 October.

This is on the weekend before the Australian Champs and is a great chance to have a go at the new Mass Start format.  3 events in 3 days will provide competitors with some excellent single track and fire road riding in two very different locations.

The Mass Start will use a newly prepared map adjacent to the National Arboretum at East Stromlo. The Middle Distance and Long distance will challenge competitors with a combination of excellent single tracks and undulating fire roads at Kowen Forest.

Read the information flyer available on Eventor.

https://eventor.orienteering.asn.au/Events/Show/7527   Entries close OCT 13

Australian MTBO Champs – 25-27 October

This will be the first ever Australian MTBO Championships featuring 4 individual Championship events.  The new mass start format is being run as well as the traditional sprint, middle & long.

The Championship carnival is being conducted at Maryborough, Victoria. This area has historical significance as the Relay event for the 2004 World Championships was held there, to great international acclaim.  The terrain is undulating rather than hilly with a good network of tracks to provide the necessary mental challenge.   Fast riding is assured.

This makes it suitable for everyone from the expert to the novice.  There are two e-Bike classes to choose from as well.  There is also a training event and area available using the innovative Map Run phone and App technology.

The sprint, middle & mass start events all start within 4 kilometres of central Maryborough whilst the long championship honours will be contested 24kms north at Dunnolly.

The Championships are also a round of the World Masters Series, the final round of the National MTBO Series and an Australia-New Zealand Challenge. All good reasons to be part of something very special.   Entries are adding up with a large contingent of New Zealanders coming over, plus a handful of riders from Europe but please make sure you get your entry in before October 13th or oct 18th if you wish to pay late entry.

2019 National Rankings – non-elite – Revised

Revised National non-Elite Rankings

Statistician Notes:

1. An error has been detected in the way the rankings were calculated this year. Corrected rankings are below. The error resulted in orienteers receiving a higher ranking score than the published formula would suggest. The error was larger the further down the rankings one found oneself. As a result of the correction being applied some runners previously in the list have dropped below the cut-off limit of 50. In addition, there have been a few small adjustments to the order of orienteers in the lists. Apologies are offered for any inconvenience caused.

2. While not being required by the Statistician’s role, it has been the practice to draw out whatever facts from the rankings that might be of interest to orienteers. Where more than one family member has placed in the rankings it has been highlighted. This causes some difficulties in relation to the definition of a family and the Statistician knowing family relationships when surnames are not the same. There has been a number of requests this year to include family members where the Statistician is unaware or relationships. This segment could be dropped or continued on a best-effort basis. It is proposed to continue the segment due to the interest shown. The Statistician will maintain a list of families (as defined by the families themselves) and add to the list when advised following publication. Proactively, orienteers can inform the Statistician of their family relationships if they think more than one family member is going to place in the rankings.

2019 National Rankings – non-elite

Rankings in non-elite classes have been determined based on results in the Australian 3-Days Championship (31, 32, 33), Australian Championships (AS, AM, AL) and the Oceania Championships (OS, OM, OL).

Points are awarded for each event completed on the basis of 100 points for first place and lesser points for other competitors. One’s best 3 events contribute to one’s ranking.

When more than one orienteer in a class has 100 points, the first ranked orienteer is determined by the average of their three best winning margins.

As there were more events this busy year one would expect a number of classes would have more than one orienteer with 100 points. Indeed in the M12 class there were 3 orienteers on 100 points:

  • Euan Best EV T
  • Eckart Bosman SW W
  • Luke Feuerherdt BG V

Some points of interest in the 2019 rankings:

1. In 10 classes two orienteers earned maximum points (separated by winning margins):

  • Judi Herkes BK V, Jean Baldwin GS N, W75
  • Jenny Bourne EU V, Carolyn Jackson BK V, W60

  • Warren Key MF V, Greg Barbour BF N, M55
  • Stephen Craig NC N, Jock Davis BF N, M50
  • Oliver Freeman BF N, Tom Weihart BF N, M14

2. 31 clubs had members in the first three places in their respective classes:

  • BF N, RR A (7)
  • AL T, PO A (6)
  • MF V, NC N (5)
  • BG V, BK V, BO W, YV V (4)
  • GO N, LO W, OH S, TJ S (3)
  • BS A, EV T, GS N, UG Q, WO W (2)
  • DR V, EN Q, EU V, KO W, LI S, SH N, SW W, TT S, UR N, WA S, WE A, YA S (1)

3. The most successful states for first places were: Victoria (9), NSW (8), ACT (7).

4. Families with two or more members in the first three places were: Baldwin (Jean W75, Basil M80); Dufty/West (Penny W75, Amy W12, Craig M45, Rachel W40); Uppill (Robyn W65, Adrian M65), Key (Susan W60, Milla W14, Warren M55); Shingler (Paula W55, Nea W14); Enderby (Jennifer W50, Erika W14); Rothery/Chalmers (Aoife W12, Eoin M60, Cath W50); Hogg (Luca W12, Katy W10, Andy M45); Craig (Stephen M50, Martina W45); Feuerherdt (Lachlan M14, Luke M12, Craig M40); Freeman (Oliver M14, Alton M10); Marschall (Jack M16, Ben M10); Gray (Mikaela W16, Meredith W40); Kullmann/Arthur (Rosemary W70, Bruce M45); Kertesz/Halmai (Istvan M35, Nikolett W35).

5. NSW orienteers filled the first 5 placings in the M50 class.

6. The following orienteers were ranked in 2 age classes:

  • Stephen Craig M50, M35
  • Jenny Bourne W60, W55

7. The class rankings are calculated for orienteers who scored in the range 100 to 50. Up to the first 10 ranked orienteers are published here. If anyone would like the complete list see ‘News’ on the OA website.

8. The maximum number of ranked runners in a class was 31 in M55.

9. If you have any comments or corrections please let the statistician know.

2019 Silva Medal

2019 Silva Medal

The Silva Medal has been won by Stephen Craig NC N. Congratulations Stephen.

The Silva Medal competition for 2019 is based on points for participating and placing in the Australian Championships (Sprint, Middle and Long), the Australian 3-Days Championships (each day considered as a separate event) and the Oceania Championships (Sprint, Middle and Long) (Elite and A classes in M/W16 and above). One’s best 6 events counts towards this award.

Points are scored for completing a course as follows: 1st – 4; 2nd – 3; 3rd – 2 and 1 for finishing, 1 point if there are less than 4 starters.
Four orienteers won at least 6 of the 9 events scoring a maximum of 24 points. To determine the winner of the Silva Medal a countback based on average winning margins was used.

Orienteers who scored 20 points of more are listed below.

A second list contains 4 previous winners of this award.

2019 NOL final pointscore

The final points for the 2019 NOL season can be found here.

In yesterday’s last race,Bridget Anderson (SA Arrows) beat Natasha Key (Victoria) by enough to win the Senior Women title. Victoria had a strong day to win the Senior Women teams competition.

The full list of winners is:

Simon Uppill, Senior Men
Bridget Anderson, Senior Women
Patrick Miller, Junior Men
Tara Melhuish, Junior Women

Canberra Cockatoos: Senior Men, Junior Men, Junior Women
Victoria: Senior Women.

Congratulations to everyone and to all competitors and event organisers for an exciting season.

NOL Points Update

The National Orienteering League pointscore has been updated following today’s Oceania Long Distance Competition.

Simon Uppill (SA Arrows) has defended his Senior Men title, in addition to the classes already resolved earlier in the week. Matt Doyle can tie and be a joint winner if he wins tomorrow and Simon places lower than fourth. Natasha Key (Victoria) has overtaken Bridget Anderson to lead senior women by 3 points but the final result in that class will depend upon the last race tomorrow.

In the Senior Women teams, Victoria have extended their lead over the Canberra Cockatoos but it is still possible, although unlikely, for the Cockatoos to win the season tomorrow.

The current pointscore can be found here.

National Orienteering League Pointscore

The 2019 NOL pointscore has been updated following last weekend’s races. The season concludes with two races next weekend.

The Canberra Cockatoos have won Senior Men, Junior Men and Junior Women competitions. Tara Melhuish and Patrick Miller have won the individual junior classes. Congratulations to the Cockatoos.

Victoria leads the Cockatoos in Senior Women, Simon Uppill has almost won Senior Men, while in Senior Women Bridget Anderson narrowly leads Natasha Key and that result will probably be decided on the last race.

The full pointscore can be found here.

Embargoes for Melbourne Sprint Weekend

Orienteering Victoria have announced embargoed areas for the Melbourne Sprint Weekend in March 2020. Details can be found here.

2019 Silva Medal – Progress Scores after the Australian Long Championships

Silva Medal 2019

Progress Scores after Australian Long

After seven events that contribute to the determination of the winner of the Silva Medal 3 orienteers have achieved the maximum points (24) with at least 6 wins. They are Robin Uppill and Bruce Arthur with 7 wins and Stephen Craig with 6 wins. 6 other orienteers can achieve 6 wins with 1 or 2 wins from the remaining 2 events.

Therefore the Silva Medal winner will be determined on a countback.

With 9 events used to calculate the Silva Medal this year the maximum points can be achieved with less that 6 victories provided significant points are achieved in events other than those won. Theoretically, 22 other orienteers can reach maximum points at this time. These orienteers will have less than 6 wins and therefore will have to carry at least one negative winning margin, making their chances of a win possible but slim.

The average winning margin for the current leading three orienteers are:

  • Stephen Craig 28%

  • Bruce Arthur 19%

  • Robin Uppill 3%

Robin has had some narrow wins. Both Stephen and Bruce have had some good wins.

Progressive scores will be announced at the presentation for each event providing time allows between finalisation of the event and the presentation to carry out the calculations.
