ANZ Secondary Schools Trophy arrives in Australia

The ANZ Secondary Schools Challenge Trophy has arrived in Australia   for the first time since the inception of this Australia New Zealand  Challenge in 2005.

What a fantastic carnival it was for the more than 50 Australian Secondary School students who took part. A great opportunity to network, make friends and experience the fun of a major international event. Congratulations to the four selected Australian Secondary Schools teams who did so well on the first day holding the NZ side to a 2 all draw and for maintaining their cool on the second day ( a sprint relay) whilst dealing with hot steaming vents and pressure from high performing NZ teams.

Thanks to the cheering from 9 supporting Australian relay teams and ten regional NZ relay teams the event took on an exciting carnival atmosphere with many spectators as the selected 8 teams tussled it out to decide the winner. The fun and the excitement fortunately overshadowed the disappointment that two controls had been unfortunately mislabelled causing the sprint relay result to be annulled. The young athletes scarcely noticed as for them the socialising and technical running was just as important. The Australia vs NZ Secondly Schools Challenge was officially declared a “draw” with NZ suggesting Australia take the trophy across the ditch from where they will no doubt try to wrest it back at Oceania 2019 in Wagga Wagga / Canberra / Beechworth. A big thank you to the Kiwis for staging such an inclusive carnival and to Brenton Gray for his managing of the logistics.

Australian gold rush at World Masters

In an extraordinary day of results at the World Masters Orienteering Championships sprint final in Auckland, Australia won 12 of the 23 gold medals on offer. This included a clean sweep of the medals in W45, and a double in W35. So complete was the dominance of the green and gold that Ugly Gully on its own, with three gold medallists, was above any other country in the medal tally.

The Australian gold medallists were:

W35 – Anna Sheldon (also Shannon Jones 2nd)

W40 – Jo Allison

W45 – Natasha Key (also Cathy McComb 2nd, Jennifer Enderby 3rd)

W50 – Su Yan Tay

W60 – Jenny Bourne

W85 – Sue Healy

M35 – Matt Crane

M45 – Grant Bluett

M55 – Warren Key

M60 – Geoff Lawford

M70 – Greg Chatfield

M90 – Hermann Wehner

Other Australian medallists were Bruce Arthur (3rd, M40) and Dale Ann Gordon (3rd, W75).

Competition continues on Wednesday with the first long distance qualification race.

Results and splits are available on the WMOC 2017 results page.

Allison wins Oceania Long Distance Championship

Jo Allison has taken out the Oceania Long Distance Championship in W21E in today’s event in tough sand-dune terrain in Woodhill Forest near Auckland. In a fluctuating race in which the top four were separated by just over a minute, she recovered from a mid-course mistake to edge out Susen Loesch (Germany) and Imogene Scott (New Zealand), with Krystal Neumann just behind. The win carries with it a place in this year’s World Championships long distance should she take it up.

The hosts did better in the men’s event and both sprints. Gene Beveridge led Matt Ogden home in the long, with Simon Uppill the best Australian in third, a place he also occupied in the sprint behind a different pair of locals (Ross Morrison and Cameron Tier). Scott was the lead Oceania runner in the women’s sprint, although the two fastest times were run by current Australian residents not eligible for the Oceania title, Charlotte Watson and Liis Johansen. Belinda Lawford and Natasha Key were tied for second Oceania.

The Australia-New Zealand Challenge is dead level after two days of individual competition and will come down to the middle distance on Monday. Australia edged out New Zealand 13 classes to 11 in the sprint, but that result was reversed in the long to leave it 24-24.

Competition continues with the relay tomorrow.

Results are available at the Oceania 2017 page.

NOL Round 2 Results

It was another exciting weekend of racing for the NOL with two events in Canberra. Updated NOL point scores can be found at:

2017 NOL Points after Round 2

The Arrows’ Simon Uppill leads the senior men from Matt Crane after two good wins on Matt’s home ground. Cockatoo Charlotte Watson won both senior women races to take a strong lead over Jo Allison. Nugget Aston Key has broken away a little in the junior men with a 2nd and a win, while Toby Wilson and Jarrah Day are only split by a point in the minor places. In the junior women Tassie Forester Zoe Dowling had a win today to remain in the lead from Tara Melhuish who won on Saturday.

In the teams competition the Canberra Cockatoos lead both senior classes, with NSW Stingers leading the junior men and Tas Foresters the junior women.

The next round is three races at the Oceania Champs.
