Four orienteers, all of whom have been selected in this year’s JWOC team, have been added to the National Junior Squad. They are:
Men: Rob Fell, Louis Elson
Women: Bridget Anderson, Belinda Lawford
All other team members (and reserves) were already members of the Squad.
The next major reselection of the squad will take place in October after the Oceania Championships carnival, although the selection panel have the option to add people to the squad before then if they see fit.
The Australian Team to contest the Junior World Championships has been announced following the final trials and National League races this weekend. The team will be spearheaded by South Australians Vanessa Round and Simon Uppill who won both trials in convincing fashion this weekend. The full team is:
Men: N Andrewartha (Tas), R Challen (WA), L Elson (Tas), R Fell (Vic), M Neve (Vic), S Uppill (SA).
Women: B Anderson (Qld), I Booth (ACT), J Davis (Tas), H Harding (ACT), B Lawford (Vic), V Round (SA).
The Trials and National League races were held in the tough granite terrain near Eugowra, designed to test the runners in terrain similar to that which will be used for JWOC. Uppill won his races by 6 minutes (from Rob Fell) and 16 minutes (from Louis Elson) over the two days, while Round beat Heather Harding on both days by 2 and 9 minutes respectively. These two appear to be the ones to watch in July.
In the Senior National League Grace Elson took out day 1, while Anna Quayle once again showed her liking to detailed terrain to win day 2. Julian Dent (NSW) and Matt Crane (GBR) swapped first and second place on the two days.

Orienteering Australia in partnership with the Orienteering ACT is seeking an enthusiastic and effective communication oriented person to manage our high performance programs.
Selection Criteria. You will be passionate about the development of Australian orienteering to be a leading nation on the world stage and have high level communication skills, the ability to meet critical deadlines, possess high level of organisational skills, well developed inter-personal skills and have an enthusiasm for the development of a national high performance orienteering program.
Your duties will include;
· supporting high performance coach and athlete development,
· managing the coaching and management team for national teams and squads,
· managing the Australian National League,
· working with ACTAS as Orienteering Australia’s National Training Centre on high performance competition and coaching matters,
· liaise with the AIS and state based sports institutes on matters relating to athlete development and
· administer OACT’s ACTAS and Anti-Doping responsibilities.
A salary of $28,200 plus WorkCover insurance and a 9% Superannuation Guarantee contribution is offered for this 0.6 full-time position to be worked on a flexible basis.

Orienteering Australia is seeking an enthusiastic and effective communication oriented person to manage the development of our coaching and officiating development programs.
Selection Criteria. You will have high level communication skills, the ability to meet critical deadlines, possess high level of organisational skills, well developed inter-personal skills, the capacity to maintain and develop curricula and a passion for the development of coaching as an integral component of the development of Australian orienteering at all competition levels.
Your duties will include; managing coach development for Orienteering Australia, overseeing the development and maintenance of curricula for the accreditation of Coaches and Officials under the ASC National Coaching Accreditation Scheme (NCAS) and National Officiating Accreditation Scheme (NOAS), being the OA Liaison Officer with the Australian Sports Commission on Coaching and Officiating matters and acting as the Executive Officer of the Coaching Committee of Orienteering Australia.
A salary of $9,100 pa, plus WorkCover insurance and a 9% Superannuation Guarantee contribution is offered for this 0.2 full-time position to be worked on a flexible basis.

OA would like to invite expressions of interest for the position of Australian Bushrangers Coach which is to be vacant from 1 August 2007.
The Bushrangers team, which is a strong development tool for our aspiring elite orienteers, will be competing in the return leg of the test match series against New Zealand at the Oceania Champs in Canberra in October.

The races will act as the selection trials for the Australian team for the Junior World Champs to be held in Dubbo in July. Saturday is also the NSW Middle Distance Champs whilst the two races form National Leagues 10 and 11

The Australian Boomerangs Team for the 2007 World Orienteering Championships was announced by OA Chair of Selectors, Paul Liggins, today. The team of 5 women and 5 men includes one debutant – South Australia’s Reuben Smith who is currently residing and training in Sweden. In addition, Kathryn Ewels makes a welcome return to the team after a four year absence.

Orienteering Australia congratulates all selected athletes. The decision on which athletes will compete in which races will be made closer to the World Championships, and the team coaches will be in touch with the athletes shortly.
Queensland’s Anna Sheldon and SA’s Simon Uppill were clear winners in the Middle Distance National League race at Petticoat Gully, Creswick.
It was a good day for the Southern Arrows’ men, winning both the sprint and middle teams races in the mens elite division, and bridging most of the gap to the top placed Victoria Nuggets.
Top courses and brilliant gold mining terrain provided an excellent venue for the national team selection trial.
Tristan Lee and Heather Harding took out the junior division classes.
Kathryn Ewels and Grace Elson tied for first place in the Sprint Distance race at Monash University. This was also the National Orienteering League race 8 and the World Championship team trial for the sprint. Jasmine Neve, Tracy Bluett, Susanne Casanova and Anna Sheldon were also very close behind.
Matt Crane (GBR) took out the men’s race from Bruce Arthur and Simon Uppill.
Competitors are now travelling 1.5 hours to Creswick for the Middle Distance race this afternoon in complex gold mining terrain.

Orienteering Australia advise that due to a change in the work circumstances Grant Bluett has had to resign as coach of the Australian JWOC team for the 2007 Junior World Championships. As a consequence, Jim Russell will join with Hanny Allston as a joint coaching team to prepare the team for competing in Dubbo this coming July. Both Hanny and Jim will be in attendance at the final selection trails to be held on the weekend of May 20-21.
