Alex Tarr’s new map of the “Fonthill” property at Lemont in Tasmania’s midlands proved trickier than first glances might have indicated. Those who managed clean runs posted fast times, but vague terrain often means big time losses when contact with the map is lost, as many competitors discovered on Sunday. Paul Liggins summed it up succinctly when he claimed a match-play win over Ryan Smyth in M21, but graciously accepted that 8 minutes of errors at controls 4 and 5 made a follow-up win difficult. Although having the fastest split in more than half of the legs, Paul finished 4:32 behind Ryan, and 3:04 behind Paul Pacque, with Darryl Smith was just under two minutes behind in fourth place.
In W21, Corinna Woolford followed up her win in the middle distance championships, after Louise Fairfax conceded a massive 13 minutes on the first control to eventually finish just over six minutes behind Corinna, and over 3 minutes behind Emma Warren. In the keenly contested W35 class, Christine Brown ran a consistent race to win from Cathy McComb, Sue Hancock, Christine Marshall and Miriam Whittington.
In another closely contested class (M55), Nigel Davies won by 35 seconds from David Marshall after David detoured to the finish via the start after the last control. Oscar Phillips (M16) was the dominant competitor on the course, almost 4 minutes faster than Nigel, who claimed his detour (to Burgundy after the Scottish 6 day), was worth at least that difference.
