IOF Anti-Doping update

Message from the IOF:

Please make sure that all your athletes and coaches are aware of the WADA Prohibited List that lists prohibited substances and methods in sport. The current list can be found on the WADA website.

It can also be downloaded from iTunes.

Please make sure all your athletes always consult the list before taking any medication – prescribed or not. Whatever the doctors say, the athletes are still always responsible for what they take.

If an athlete needs to take a medication that is on the Prohibited List, he/she should apply for a Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE) BEFORE starting to take the medicine using the TUE application form.

Silva National Orienteering League Round 1

The first event of this weekend of sprint events was a sprint relay. Teams of two runners both running twice. The map was Roma St Parklands in central Brisbane, a small intricate area with many sections of olive green and some out of bounds areas. A great setting for a relay with the changeover and the finish at the amphitheater in the park. Wendy Read spent many hours making this map and also set the challenging courses.

Womens Relay winners- R Effeney, A Sheldon.

Sprint Relay winners female

In the womens relay the ACT team of Lizzie Ingham and Mace Neve had the lead after the second leg from the QLD team of Anna Sheldon and Rachel Effeney with the Victorian team of Aislinn Prendergast and Jasmine Neve only 2 seconds behind in third. Anna Sheldon took QLD into the lead on the third leg and Rachel Effeney held onto this lead for QLD to be the winners, two minutes in front of ACT and the second QLD (Heather Muir/Katelyn Effeney) team taking third in front of the Victorian team.

Mens Relay winners- L Dow, I Lawford

The Victorian team of Todd Neve and Bruce Arthur held on to take third with the fast finishing juniors from NSW Aidan Dawson and Daniel Hill coming from 11th after the second leg to finish 4th.

The Sprint qualification was held on a new map- Griffith University. A very technical area with many different levels and some intense map reading required. There were two heats for each division with the fastest 5 from each heat progressing to the A final.

The Mens heat A was a much faster heat with Simon Uppill the winner in 17:04 and the fifth qualifier Murray Scown running 18:04. The B heat was won by Lachlan Dow in 17:25 and the fifth qualifier Andrew Brown running 20:01.

The womens heats were won by Lizzie Ingham 16:37 and Hanny Allston 16:41. The junior mens heat A was the fastest with Henry McNulty winning in 17:36. Heat B was won by the Swedish junior Ludvig Ahlund in 17:48. The junior womens heats were won by the NSW pair of Nicola Blatchford and Michele Dawson.

The finals were held on the Kelvin Grove campus of the QIT, a map previously used for a NOL event in 2011. In the womens final Hanny Allston started 1 minute behind Lizzie Ingham and she caught Lizzie at control 9 and was in the lead for the rest of the race to be a comfortable winner in 20:06, Lizzie Ingham second in 21:04 and Rachel Effeney third in 21:47. Sprint Canberra and HP Sprint Training Camp

Monday saw the conclusion of the Sprint Canberra series of events. These events were organised by the OA HP Group to coincide with the first HP Sprint Training Camp which was based at the AIS. 42 athletes from all the HP Squads and some other athletes who have shown talent have just completed five days of intense sprint training as well as competing in the Sprint Canberra series.

We would like to acknowledge the efforts of Dave Meyer both in coordinating and organising the Sprint Canberra series but also helping out with the camp organisation through his contacts at the AIS. He was supported in the organisation of the Sprint Canberra events by both Ron Pallas and Toph Norton. The five course setters- Eric Morris, Ben Rattray, Shannon Jones, Ollie Poland and Andy Hogg- provided the competitors with challenging sprint courses with varying formats and on some great sprint maps.

Also sessions were held after dinner looking at the Challenges of Sprint orienteering and explaining the new HP Pathways that are related to each of the athletes at the camp. The newly appointed JWOC Manager- Karen Blatchford, and Coach- Hanny Allston took the opportunity to talk to the juniors at the camp about JWOC plans for the next two years.

Locals Lizzie and Lachie Lead Orienteering Series

Locals Lizzie Ingham and Lachie Dow lead their divisions of the 5-day elite orienteering series Sprint Canberra after three races. Both won race 1, a 3,300 metres event in the environs of AIS and CIT Bruce on Thursday evening. Ingham was a clear winner by 38 seconds from Hanny Allston, while Dow had only four seconds to spare from fellow Canberra Cockatoo Matt Crane.

Ingham repeated the result in the 2,120 metre race 2 at Radford College on Friday, but Dow had to settle for third place, eight seconds behind visitor, Henry McNulty (WA). Ingham continued her unbeaten sequence with another victory over Allston in race 3 over 3,000 metres at CSIRO Black Mtn on Saturday evening. Crane was the victor over Dow, with McNulty third. Race 4 will be over 2,800 metres at Remembrance Park this evening.

Race 5 will start at 10.00 am tomorrow at Fellows Oval ANU with competitors starting at one-minute intervals in the reverse order to their placing after race 4. Barring major mishaps, Ingham and Dow should have the benefit of being the last starters.

The other class leaders after race 3 are Grant McDonald (MO), Anita Scherrer (WO) (both pictured above), Mason Arthur (MS) and Gemma Ruddick (WS). The points scores after race 3 are here.

OA HP Sprint Orienteering

On Thursday 42 of Australia’s elite orienteers both senior and junior as well as some up and coming younger orienteers will be participating in a Sprint orienteering training camp. This camp will be based at the AIS in Canberra and involve participation in the five event series Sprint Canberra being organised in conjunction with the training camp. Entries for these events has now closed and we have 131 entries with many EOD expected from the local Canberra community.

The training will very much have a sprint focus and include some novel exercises to challenge the athletes speed, concentration and ability to deal with stress (mental and physical). The facilities at the AIS will be used for recovery sessions, talks and discussion and also some track time trials.

This camp will be followed on February 22nd/23rd with Round 1 of the 2014 NOL program which will involve three sprint events in Brisbane including a sprint relay on the Saturday morning.
