Vacancy: Editor, OA Monthly Enews bulletin

Maggie Jones, the outstanding editor for the last 2 years of Orienteering Australia’s monthly enews bulletin, has won a promotion in her day job. So the December edition of the enews will be her last.
Orienteering Australia is therefore seeking an enthusiastic replacement with good writing and enews formatting skills, with familiarity with MailChimp desirable but not essential. This is a part time paid contract position. Applications are sought which detail relevant qualifications and experience by 9 December to John Harding, Executive Officer at orienteering@netspeed.com.au

Oceania Orienteering Championships – January 2015 Tasmania

There is still time to enter for the Oceania Orienteering Championships. Entries are closing at midnight November 30. Be a part of Oceania 2015 and join 5 current World Champions in a fantastic week of orienteering from January 2 to 11 in Tasmania, Australia.

Visit the carnival website at http://oceania2015.com/ for all the information you need to be a part of this special week of orienteering.

Coaching News

OA is organising two very significant events as part of our plan to increase the number of qualified coaches within each state and also to develop a greater knowledge of how successful orienteering countries structure their coaching pathways and how this can be applied to the FTEM pathways structure recently implemented by OA.

1. Coaching Seminar to be held in St Helens (St Helens High School) on Friday 9th January- 2:00pm-5:00pm.

Special guest speakers will be the current Danish and Swedish National Team Coaches: Lars Lindstrom and Hakan Carlsson.

Both these very experienced orienteering coaches will be talking about the pathways structure- from junior level to world champion that currently exists in two of the most successful orienteering countries in recent years- Denmark and Sweden.

This seminar is open to all orienteers (senior and junior) who are interested in learning more about how the successful countries achieve the level they have. Especially any orienteer who is planning on attending the Coaching Conference in January will benefit from attending the seminar.

2. Coaching Conference- January 24th-25th AIS, Canberra.

A Coaching Conference is being planned by the Orienteering Australia High Performance Coaches. This conference is aimed at any orienteer who is interested in gaining  Level 1 Coaching Accreditation, or wants to update their current Coaching Accreditation at Level 1, 2 or 3. This conference will enable currently accredited coaches to gain points towards increasing the level of their coaching accreditation.

Given the introduction of the FTEM Athlete Development Pathway into orienteering and also the restructuring of the National Squads there is a clear need to increase the number of active coaches within orienteering in Australia at all levels- club, state and national.

Current Australian National Coaches- Nick Dent, Wendy Read, Hanny Allston , Jim Russell and Russell Blatchford will be the co-odinators of the Conference. Current Level 2 and Level 1 coaches will have the opportunity to present a session during the conference.

Main areas of the conference will be

  • Understanding the FTEM- Athlete Development Pathway– especially as it applies to each level of coaching.
  • Establishing clearly defined benchmarks for each level within the FTEM framework.
  • Coaching the physical, technical and mental aspects of orienteering at each level.
  • Skill development at each level of the pathway and practical methods for coaching these.
  • An understanding of the different orienteering disciplines.
  • How to become an elite orienteer.
  • For Level 2 and 3 Coaches- using AMP.

The conference will take place the AIS in Canberra, where full board accommodation will be available.

Each state association and also clubs are encouraged to send their currently qualified coaches or anyone interested in gaining coaching accreditation.

Double Gold to Jenny Bourne at WMOC in Brazil

Following on from decisive win in the W60 class in the Sprint Final, Jenny Bourne who qualified fastest from her two heats in the Long Qualification races was also the winner in the Final of the Long Distance event in W60. Her time was 38:52 for the 3.9km course. Jenny was 1:08 in front of second. Jenny had a remarkably consistent week of orienteering, finishing a close second in both qualification races and then maintaining this consistency to win her second final.

Other Australians to do well were Paul Pacque and Ted van Gedermalsen in M60 class. Paul had an improved performance in the final to finish in 7th place after qualifying in his heat in 10th place. Ted finished 10th in the final after qualifying in 4th place in his heat.

Aussie Victory at WMOC in Brazil

The World Masters Orienteering Championships are currently being held in Brazil. This is the first time a world orienteering championship has been held on the South American continent. There is a small contingent of Australians who have made the journey to Brazil to compete in these championships.

Yesterday the Sprint Finals were held. This description of the terrain comes from Blairs  Attackpoint log.

WMOC Sprint Qualification– this was largely a running race, although the use of artificial fences added a bit of interest to it, particularly early in the course

 Sprint Final Terrain
Sprint Final Terrain

WMOC Sprint Final– was in a park around a major waterfall- partly cleared picnic grounds but a lot of thick forest with an extensive track network. There wasn’t a lot that actually made you go into the thick forest, but it made for some interesting route choice. Quite hilly too.

Australia has one world masters champion Jenny Bourne who won the W60 Sprint Final by quite a large margin 47 seconds.
