MTBO – European Champs and JWOC Relays

The final events at the European Champs and JWOC MTBO were the relays.
In the former the depth of the Danish men was demonstrated when their no 1 team incurred a mispunch but their no 2 team came through to win the gold, just 90 seconds ahead of Estonia, with Russia taking bronze.

The women’s event was even closer with Finland prevailing by just 25 seconds over Austria, with Denmark gaining another bronze medal.  On the last leg Finland’s Ingrid Stenmark started with a 90 second lead with Austrian champion Michi Gigon chasing hard. Adding to the intrique was that both girls were on exactly the same split. A 60 second mistake by Ingrid going to no 19 saw Michi get within sight but she couldn’t bridge the gap, despite taking fastest time for the day.

In JWOC Finland and Russia were the dominant nations.  In the boy’s relay Finland 1 had a clear 7 minute win over Finland 2, with Russia and Austria being next.  In the girl’s the favoured Russia no 1 team won by 6 minutes from Finland, Russia 2 and the Czech republic. This saw Svetlana Poverino collect her 3rd gold medal of these championships.

Adrian Jackson has just completed the 7 stage TransGermany event finishing a fine 20th (out of 180) overall and being part of the 4 man Merida Multivan winning team. On stage 6 he was 19th, and on stage 7 he placed a pleasing 16th, just 6 minutes behind the winner over a 3 hour race.

WOC MTBO News
Bulletin 3 is now available at the following link, with information on entrants, course details and terrains.http://www.nivut.org.il/mtbo/Bulletins.aspx
Unfortunately these championships will have the lowest ever entrants of the 7 WOCs run to date.  This is due to the worry caused by the fighting outbreak some months ago and thus many riders have chosen to prioritise the European Championships in Denmark rather than committing to WOC.  No NZ’ers are racing this year.

JWOC Team hits the streets of Venice

The JWOC Team enjoys the sights of Venice after a training race
The JWOC Team enjoys the sights of Venice after a training race

The 2009 Australian JWOC team started their overseas preparations in Venice last Saturday. The day began with a sprint style run using the Venice-O 2007 map, (Australian Orienteer March 2008), and a Nick Dent edited course of about 3km, completed in amongst thousands of people, rain and the unique narrow streets of Venezia. What a fantastic experience for them.  They spent the rest of the day wandering around eating gelati; enjoying ferry rides; a swim at Lido beach and taking in the sights and enjoying each other’s company.

The team left from Mestre in two 9 seater buses on Sunday morning, ( with only one key missing from Camp Venezia accommodation!!!) headed for Cesuna for the training camp. Their accommodation has immediate access to 2 training maps.  Coach Nick is keeping preparations low-key and stress free and avoiding the JWOC hype for as long as possible.  They will go to JWOC training areas on Wednesday to complete a sprint and middle distance course and take the opportunity to drive through the long distance and sprint distance areas.

European MTBO Championships Continue

The European MTBO men’s long event championship saw Denmark, the host nation have a sensational result with their 6 riders finishing in the top 10 of the 82 strong field. They also took the quinella, this time with Lasse Brun Pederson (100 minutes) having a 2 minute victory over Erik Skovgaard Knusden. Denmark’s success is not unexpected as the men won the world championship relay last year.   Alex Randall finished 24th in 109 minutes, while Anthony Darr came 68th in 138 minutes.

Russia’s Nadiya Mikryukova won the women’s gold in 92 minutes, with Austrian Sonya Zinkl breaking into the medals for the first time in a major international event in 2nd (94 mins) just ahead of her compatriot Michi Gigon. Estonia’s Maret Vaher was 4th. South Aussies will remember her brother Sander who studied here. The increasing depth of women’s MTBO was reflected in the 9 nations represented in the top 10 today.

In the Junior Worlds the two 4th placegetters from yesterday’s middle distance climbed to the top of the podium today.   Austria’s Kevin Haselsberger and the Finn Susanna Laurila were the delighted winners. 2nd place for Kaisu Yli-Peltola gave her 2 silvers and a bronze in the individual events.  Svetlana Poverina, winner of both the sprint and middle had to settle for 4th while Britain’s Emily Benham was again on the podium in 5th.

Adrian Jackson had a mechanical in day 4 of the TransGermany event busting a derailleur and having to limp to the finish albeit still in 40th spot, but with major time loss, being 51 minutes behind the winner.  On day 5 he pulled back some time finishing in 26th position in 4hrs 02, just 13 minutes behind the winner.

The Danes got two medals in the men’s race, with Erik Skovgaard Knudsen winning in 53.15 and Lasse Brun Pedersen in 3rd.  Our two reps were a little further down the placings than yesterday, but it was very close in time at the pointy end of the field.  Alex Randall was 31st in 59.45, just 6 minutes down, while Anthony Darr was 75th in 78 mins.   Tomorrow (Thursday) is the long event.

New Executive Officer for Orienteering Australia

John1John Harding of Bush Flyers in the ACT has been appointed the new Executive Officer of Orienteering Australia, commencing Monday 15 June 2009. John has a strong background over 35 years in both sports and government administration and was awarded the Australian Sports Medal for services to athletics administration in 2000. He has been orienteering regularly for the last 16 years after a previous sporting life as a runner with a 10 km road best of 30:55 and marathon best of 2:28:44. In 1978 he won the 13 km Kosciusko Classic from Mt Crackenback to the summit of Mt Kosciusko and return in 45:40, and regrets that he resisted overtures at the time from then Australian orienteering champion Maurice Ongania to take up orienteering seriously. As an old and slow M55 he now enjoys it when he manages the occasional win over such notables as Peter Shepherd, Paul Prudhoe, Bert Elson and other miscreants (me), and is looking forward to World Masters Orienteering in October. He is excited about contributing to the development of orienteering in Australia through his new administrative role.

On behalf of the Board of Orienteering Australia I would like to thank Kay Grzadka for the outstanding contribution she has made as Executive Officer during the last two years and wish her the best for her European holiday during which she plans to visit the Greek Islands and Paris, among other locations.

2009 Australian MTBO Champs and National MTBO Series

The 2009 National Series standings have been updated after a tough weekend of racing at the Australian MTBO Championships.

Adrian Jackson and Thor Egerton lead the way in the Mens and Womens Elite fields.  Adrian now has an unassailable lead, but Thor will need to continue her hard work in Queensland if she is to take out the series for a second year running.

In the teams competition, Victoria swept up all three races in M21E and M20E and only lost the sprint race in W21E, while consolidating the Nuggets strong first place position in all 4 age classes at the conclusion of Round 2. Round 3 will be staged in Queensland in early September.

The weekend’s event also incorporated

the 2009 Aus/NZL MTBO Challenge.  This was convincingly won by New Zealand: NZL 13 – AUS 7 in the age classes M21-, W21-, M40-W40-, M50-, W50- and M60-. Despite winning the M21E- class for all three races (Sprint, Long and Middle) and W21E- in the Long and Middle races, the M40-, W40- and W50- riders from New Zealand won all three races to seal the Kiwi victory. The Australian M60- team salvaged some points winning the Sprint and Long races, while the AUS M50- riders won the Middle Distance race today in driving rain and wind. At the Sunday night presentation dinner (attended by a record 95 participants) the SA organizers, lead by Andrew Slattery, were given “three cheers” for an outstanding long weekend of races. A terrific atmosphere developed between the visiting 31-strong Kiwi team managed by Di Michels and the host Aussie team over the fortnight. The next AUS/NZL MTBO Challenge is scheduled to be staged in New Zealand in 2011. Complete results are on the SA webpage.
