Sullivan, Sheldon Queensland Sprint Champions

The Queensland Sprint championships were contested on Sunday at Kelvin Grove Urban Village, a technical area consisting of QUT Kelvin Grove campus, and adjacent schools, colleges and shops.  A feature of all courses was long route choice legs where runners needed to avoid significant climb while deciphering tricky passageways and level changes.

There were close contests for the wins in both senior elite classes.  In M21E Kieran Sullivan (BU.Q) took a 15sec lead over Oliver Mitchell (UG.Q) at the first control, and although he extended it to 30 secs through the middle part of the course, a fast finish by Mitchell had it back to 15secs by the finish.  Kurt Neumann (EN.Q) was in the mix with one control to go, but a late mistake relegated him to 3rd.  In the womens elite course Anna Sheldon (UG.Q) took an early lead, but was steadily caught and passed by Rachel Effeney through the mid part of the course.  Effeney (UG.Q) had a 14sec lead at the penultimate control, but in a late surge Sheldon fought back for a 30sec win.  Brea Pearce (EV.T) ran up into W21E to take 3rd.

Recently selected Australian Junior MTBO team member Chris Firman (EN.Q) took victory in M20E from Oliver Crosato (RR.Q) and Aaron Breed (UG.Q).  W20E was won by impressive newcomer Heather Muir (EN.Q), with Brooke Pye (TF.Q) 2nd and Emily Cantwell (UG.Q) 3rd.

ASC Sports Leadership Grants and Scholarships for Women Now Open

The Australian Sports Commission (ASC) and Australian Government Office for Women (OfW) are looking to develop more Australian women in leadership and decision making roles in sport.

Applications are now open for the 2010–11 round of the ASC and OfW’s Sports Leadership Grants and Scholarships for Women.

These Australian Government grants and scholarships are offered to inspire and assist women in the sports industry to reach their full potential in leadership, through education and development opportunities.

The ASC invites women from all areas and levels of the Australian sports community to apply, including women involved in sport as managers, administrators, media and communication officers, coaches, officials, and women in sport governance.

Women from culturally diverse backgrounds, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women, women in rural and regional areas and women with disability are encouraged to apply.

The grants include scholarships for women in upper sports management of up to $10,000 a year for three years, one-off grants of up to $5,000 for individuals and up to $10,000 for approved organisations.

Last year’s grants supported 132 projects across the country in developing women’s leadership skills in their sport. Now in its ninth year, these grants have supported more than 16,000 women around Australia.

Australian Sports Commission initiatives

The Australian Sports Commission is the major sponsor of Orienteering Australia. As part of the funding agreement, OA undertakes to assist the ASC in promoting initiatives to develop sport in Australia. These include the following.

Play by The Rules

The Play by The Rules website at http://www.playbytherules.net.au/ has information for clubs and sporting organisations on harassment, ethics, and discrimination policies and legislation, model member protection policies and free online training in a number of these areas. The OA Member Protection policies are based on the ASC’s model protection policies; there is additional useful detail on Play by The Rules on topics such as recommended arrangements for group trips away.

All Cultures program

On 21 March it is Harmony Day. Sports Minister Kate Ellis said, ‘New migrants are two-thirds less likely to participate in sport than other Australians and that’s a real shame. They are missing out and sport as a whole is missing out. We want to make sure that people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds can reap the lifelong health and social benefits of sport’.

The ASC has set up an All Cultures website at www.ausport.gov.au/participating/all_cultures to provide resources to assist development officers and others visiting schools and community groups where they may be able to encourage people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds to try orienteering.

Our Sporting Future Conference

The ASC will be holding Australia’s leading sports forum, Our Sporting Future, from 28–30 July 2010 at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre. OSF 2010 will provide an in-depth analysis of the business of sport, with real examples of successful sports business models. Participants will have the opportunity to examine the sustainability of sport and how it can meet any current and future challenges. The program will explore new thinking, risk taking and innovation in the development of sports policy to effect change.

There will also be topical panel discussions that address current issues in Australian sport, stimulate new ideas, challenge current ways of thinking, and provide practical information that can be applied to sporting organisations. More details are at http://www.ausport.gov.au/about/events/our_sporting_future_2010
