Dent makes it 10 from 10

Julian Dent made it 10 SILVA National League victories in a row at the ACT Long distance Championships today. The venue, Glenbrook, consists of two working farms providing fast, open granite terrain. Dent managed to clock just under 5 minutes per kilometre to take 74.38 for the 15.7km course. David Shepherd got his revenge from yesterday’s disappointing result to take silver only 11 seconds ahead of Simon Uppill. The three Men’s Senior Elite placegetters demolished the rest of the field, with 4th placed Chris Naunton a further 6 minutes back.

Kathryn Ewels from Victoria took another long distance victory in the Women’s Senior Elite with a three and a half minute victory over Shannon Jones of ACT. Ewel’s team mate Jasmine Neve rounded out the placings.

Once again it was ACT’s brother and sister duo – the Lawfords – who took out the Men’s and Women’s Junior Elite classes. Belinda Lawford scored a 47 second victory over Tasmania’s Sarah Buckerfield with Georgia Parsons in third. Ian Lawford had a ripper run to take two minutes out of second placed Josh Blatchford from NSW. Kurt Neumann from QLD was a further two minutes back in third place.

The SILVA National League will continue in NSW on 16-17 May.

The easter twenty10 and snowytreble twenty10 organising committee would like to sincerely thank all the volunteers who helped make the carnival a success. Special thank you go to all course setters, controllers, team leaders and team members. Thank you also to all competitors who made the trip to participate positively and enjoy the seven-event carnival. See you at the Australian Championships in 2011!

Middle-distance Meyer cracks the top three

julianmiddleIan “Ezy” Meyer has broken into the placings of the SILVA National League round today at Buckenderra. It has been the same three places in the Men’s Senior Elite over the past 6 races and finally Meyer bumped David Shepherd off the podium. However, it was business as usual at the top end with Julian Dent continuing his clean sweep of races with a commanding three minute victory over Simon Uppill. The granite terrain and steep hillsides suited Dent and no one could match his pace out in the forest today. Dent will be looking to make it 10 wins from 10 starts in 2010 tomorrow with the ACT Long Distance Championships to be held at Glenbrook.

Vanessa middleThe roles reversed in the Women’s Elite today with South Australia’s Vanessa Round taking the victory two minutes clear of Shannon Jones. It was a tight fight for the minor placings with Jones narrowly beating Victoria’s Kathryn Ewels by 8 seconds and Ewels in turn beating ACT’s Jo Allison by 4 seconds. Jo Allison has recently returned from a maternity break and her result today shows that she will soon be back to her form of old.

Ian and Belinda Lawford both had victories in their respective Junior Elite classes. It was Ian’s first SILVA National League win while sister Belinda made it three wins in a row. In the Men’s Junior Elite Lachlan Dow was absent from today’s race as he was the course setter along with fellow junior Luke Poland. Kurt Neumann from QLD and 2009 Australian Champion Max Neve placed second and third respectively.

Belinda’s performance in the Junior Women’s Elite was 4 minutes clear of second placed Jacqui Doyle of Queensland. Doyle is still eligible for the Women’s 16 class but has decided to take the challenge of the Junior Elite and succeeded with her first SILVA National League podium place. Sarah Buckerfield placed third.

Snowy Treble begins with a sprint @ Buckenderra

Julian Dent continued his unbeaten run in the 2010 SILVA National League at today’s ACT Sprint Championships at Buckenderra. Dent was very pleased with his run through the mixture of the village setting and granite scrub. He outclassed his rivals to win the Men’s Senior Elite title and finished one minute ahead of Simon Uppill from South Australia. Dave Shepherd was only seconds behind Uppill but again finished in third position – both Uppill and Shepherd have shared the minor placings behind Dent in the past 5 National League races. This is Dent’s last weekend of races in Australia before heading overseas to train and race in Sweden.

Shannon Jones continued her from the last day of easter twenty10 to win the Senior Women’s Elite class. Vanessa Round showed once again her consistency and solid form to place second, only 20 seconds down on Jones. A further minute back was Queenslander Anna Sheldon to round out the placings.

The Junior Men’s Elite class was the closest race of the day with one second separating the first three places. Joshua Neumann, one of the lesser known of the strong Queensland Neumann clan, outshone his more fancied rivals to take out his first National League victory. ACT duo Lachlan Dow and Ian Lawford tied for second only one second behind Neumann.

ACT’s Belinda Lawford produced a solid run to claim first place, backing up from her victory in Monday’s SILVA National League race. Sarah Buckerfield, a new resident to Canberra, finished in second with Queenslander Lillian Burrill in third. All three girls will be representing Australia at the Junior World Orienteering Championships in Denmark in July.

In the competitive Men’s 50 class, Newcastle’s Russell Blatchford won the grudge match against Canberran Grant McDonald. McDonald will be looking to turn the table tomorrow in the ACT Middle Championships at Buckenderra. The Women’s 50 class was a tight affair with Anthea Feaver claiming victory over Jenny Bourne by some seconds. Both Feaver and Bourne represented Australia at the World Orienteering Championships back in the eighties and early nineties.

Five of the twelve team members come from the ACT (including three from the Bushflyers club), and four from Tasmania.

ABC TV coverage of Easter Twenty10

ABC TV news on Sunday ran an excellent segment covering the Easter Twenty10 carnival. Seehttp://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2010/04/05/2864232.htm
Both Darryl Erbacher and Sarah Buckerfield played starring roles in the TV footage.

Many thanks to Bob Mouatt, who did a pre-carnival media blitz which also saw TV coverage by WIN news, and to the Easter Twenty10 organising team for an outstanding job.

Dent and Round claim easter twenty10 victories

14032009136NSW’s Julian Dent and South Australia’s Vanessa Round are easter twenty10 champions – after 4 days of competition the pair have come out on top in the Men’s and Women’s Elite classes at the national event which wrapped up in Collector today.

IMG_0172Julian Dent made it look easy on the day having started with a 10 minute lead over his closest rivals Simon Uppill and Dave Shepherd. Dent was relentless in his pursuit of Easter glory and stated that he had a smooth run on Ben Rattray’s course. Dent’s plan to change his speed accordingly in the low-visibility areas of Collector Hill paid off as he emerged from the forest in a class of his own. Dent is looking forward to next weekend’s set of races in the Snowy Mountains before heading overseas to compete on the world stage in Sweden. Simon Uppill (SA) and Dave Shepherd (ACT) produced solid runs to finish 2nd and 3rd in the Men’s Elite.

VanessaIt was a closer affair in the Women’s Elite with Vanessa Round causing a minor upset by starting in 3rd position, over 5 minutes down on Victoria’s Jasmine Neve, and crossing the line in first. Round passed team mate Susanne Casanova out in the forest as well as Neve who said she had some difficulties out in the forest today. Neve could not match the pace of Round, who is known for her strength in tough terrain. Neve held on to silver spot and Casanova the bronze.

IMG_1629The Men’s Junior Elite title was claimed by ACT’s Lachlan Dow with fellow team mate Oliver Poland starting and finishing in 2nd place. Queensland’s Kurt Neumann snatched third place from Ian Lawford. Neumann set a blistering pace early on and his time ended up being the fastest of the day.

IMG_1631Sarah Buckerfield and her Tasmanian comrade Claire Butler (pictured) made it one-two in the Women’s Junior Elite, although Queensland’s Lillian Burrill spoiled the Tassie trifecta by overtaking Brea Pearce in the forest. The fastest time of the day came from local favourite Belinda Lawford who started well after the main group due to a disqualification in the prologue on Friday. The Junior World Orienteering Championship (JWOC) selectors will have a tough job in picking the Australian team to compete at JWOC in Denmark later this year. The selectors should make their decision public later this week.

The easter twenty10 competition finished today but the focus moves to next weekend’s set of races at Buckenderra and Glenbrook. The easter twenty10 organising committee would like to thank our amazing 100+ volunteers for helping make the carnival a success and to over 900 competitors for coming! See you at the Snowy Treble next week!

Ewels gets her revenge while Dent goes from strength to strength

Ewels2010EasterDay1After a disappointing start to her Easter twenty10 campaign Kathryn Ewels showed her class with a comfortable win in the Women’s Elite class today. Ewels handled the intricacies of the Kowen pine forest better than her rivals, to finish three minutes clear of South Australian Susanne Casanova. In third place was Queenslander Anna Sheldon. Going into the final day’s chasing start, Victoria’s Jasmine Neve has a two minute lead overall ahead of Casanova, with Casanova’s team mate Vanessa Round in third position.

Julian Dent again dominated the field in the men’s race clocking an impressive 74 minutes and 16 seconds for his 15.5 km course through the hilly Kowen terrain. His time was six minutes clear of South Australian Simon Uppill in second place and Canberran David Shepherd was a further two minutes in third.

IMG_0175Dent will be heading off to Europe to compete after the weekend and is eager to see how his scintillating form in Australia will compare against the world’s best when he toes the line in the prestigious Tiomila relay in Sweden. Dent goes into the final day with a ten minute margin to Uppill with Shepherd heading out in third position.

Prologue victor Tasmanian Sarah Buckefield recovered from a below par performance yesterday to score her second victory of the week in the Junior Women’s Elite class. Yesterday’s winner and fellow Tasmanian Claire Butler had another solid race to come home in second place with Canberra’s Georgia Parsons finishing in third.  Buckerfield has a two minute advantage over Butler heading into the final day.

3364Local boys dominated the Junior Men’s Elite class, filling all three places on the podium in today’s long distance race. Yesterday’s winner Lachlan Dow backed up for another victory today. Second place went to the young Oliver Poland who has had a consistent Easter weekend with two third placings prior to today’s result. Third position was claimed by Ian Lawford. Lawford has fallen just outside the places in the first two races, but with today’s result he moved up to third in the overall. The three Canberrans will head out in the first three positions in tomorrow’s chasing start, in the same order as today’s results.

In other classes Geoff Lawford is leading the Men’s 55 ahead of World Masters Games champion Paul Pacque. Geoff’s partner and multiple World Masters Champion Jenny Bourne is running down an age class but has still managed to establish a ten minute lead over Anthea Feaver. Maureen Ogilvie has a 15 minute lead in the Women’s 75 class over Sue Mount. Neil Schafer is six minutes up on Ron Lange in the Men’s 80.

Dent and Neve continue their domination at Gudgenby

Julian Dent - NOL 1 BiggaJulian Dent showed again that he is in impressive form with a clear victory in today’s event at Gudgenby Homestead. In the Senior Men’s Elite class Dent toppled the rest of the field – the closest was Canberran Dave Shepherd who was nearly four minutes behind Dent’s time. The complex granite terrain provided sections of extremely technical orienteering which suited Dent’s strength and skill in the forest. Simon Uppill was three seconds behind Shepherd in third place.

IMG_1290In the Women’s Elite Jasmine Neve won again today which has set her up extremely well for the final two days of easter twenty10 competition. NSW’s Tracy Marsh made amends for a disappointing run yesterday to claim the silver spot – this was Marsh’s best National League result in recent times. Vanessa Round of the Southern Arrows led early on in the race but faded to finish in third.

The surprise win of the day came in the Junior Women’s Elite class. Claire Butler of Tasmania claimed her best ever result at the national level with a 44 second win over Queensland’s Lillian Burrill. These two girls were clearly better than their counterparts in being able to handle the tough terrain as Brea Pearce in third position was a further 4 minutes adrift.

-1Lachlan Dow of the ACT had a scintillating run in the Men’s Junior Elite class. He held a 2 minute and 20 second margin over second place’s Kurt Neumann of Queensland. Dow was pleased with today’s victory as he has been battling some ankle problems recently. Oliver Poland (still only 15 years of age) again proved his ability by rounding out the placings.

With two more days of competition remaining, the junior elites are looking to impress the national selectors and are fighting for spots on the Australian team to compete at the Junior World Orienteering Championships in Denmark later this year.

A highlight of the day was the Voice of the Forest’s prize giving ceremony which gave all competitors a chance to claim a prize. OA president Bill Jones and wife Kerryne have been declared “Mr and Mrs Average” – and the closest participants today to Mr Average’s time was Eric Wainright and to Mrs Average’s was Cathy Hogg. There were Captain Compass t shirts on offer, envirosax bags, easter twenty10 t shirts and Outer Edge magazine subscriptions.Stay tuned to Voice of the Forest for the final episode of the Captain Compass radio serial!

FRIDAY 2nd April – Family Teams Competition and Public Prologue

Team Zafelian has taken out this year’s Family Teams orienteering competition, held on a sunny day in Canberra’s centre. The team consisted of elite runners Julian Dent, Felicity Brown and Jose Zapata (co-Finish Manager at this year’s easter twenty10 carnival). All three live together in Canberra’s north and were favourites for the race. The Hill Family (Matthew, Barbara, Daniel) raced well to secure second spot and the ever present Uppill family from South Australia came in third. The Family Teams race also contains a ‘handicap’ competition aligning with the traditional Family Relays and this year the place getters were: The Hill Family, The Uppill Family and The Blatchfords from Newcastle.

In the Public Prologue competitors were given the opportunity to race against the nation’s best – the courses for both the Elite and Public Prologue were the same. In the Long Course it was Wesley Dose who was best able to match the pace clocking 18:38 with junior Brodie Nankervis not far behind on 18:52. It was a good day for the Nankervis family as Ashley Nankervis won the Medium Course with a competitive time of 18:52. Simon Phillips and Jenny Enderby were fastest seniors around the 3.2km course. On the Short Course it was Adrian Uppill who showed the most class taking only 13:12 to zip around the 2.3km course.

Easter twenty10 organisers are keen to know your thoughts on this year’s trial format for the Prologue and Family Teams races. Please complete a survey at registration or see Shannon Jones for more information.

Dent and Neve draw first blood @ Easter 2010

Julian Dent was the standout performance in the opening stage of the easter twenty10 carnival held in Canberra today. Despite a small hiccup heading towards the last control, Dent, a NSW Stinger, clocked 15:14 for the 3.5km course in the urban jungle of Campbell. Dent’s time was 44 seconds ahead of South Australian’s Simon Uppill and local Canberran David Shepherd was a further 38 seconds adrift in third place.

Jasmine_N_webIn the Women’s Elite, Victorian’s Jasmine Neve edged out Queensland Cyclone member Rachel Effeney by four seconds and both had a clear margin over third place – Susanne Casanova of South Australia. Neve showed she is back to the form that has given her selection on the Australian team in recent years. 5th place getter from the 2009 World Orienteering Championships Kathryn Ewels had some difficulty amongst the complex campus and finished in 15th place. Ewels will be looking to make up that time over the next three days.

The Junior Elite Men’s class was a tight affair with the first 6 placegetters only separated by 9 seconds. The experienced Leon Keely (Vic) came out on top, two seconds clear of New South Welshman Josh Blatchford who had a strong run after returning from injury. 15 year old local Oliver Poland rounded out the placings finishing 3 seconds behind first place.

In the Women’s Junior class, Tasmanian Sarah Buckerfield who has recently moved to Canberra to study, proved the move was worthwhile as she secured an excellent start to her Easter campaign. Lillian Burrill of Queensland had a solid run to place second and Georgia Parsons continued her recent good form

Julian_D_webTomorrow’s event takes us on a journey from the urban maze to the wilds of Namadgi National Park with the elites running a middle race at Gudgenby Homestead.
