Orienteering Australia has appointed Roch Prendergast from Victoria as the Australian Junior Development Squad Coach. We are very pleased too have Roch as one of our squad coaches as he brings to the role many years experience of coaching in orienteering at a national and a state level. He also has a background of coaching in swimming and triathlon. The appointment of Roch to this position completes the appointments of coaches to the newly formed National Squads.

The Australian Orienteering Championships Carnival will be held in and around Ballarat in just six months’ time! We are pleased to announce the launch of the carnival website, which is the place to head for all the latest news and information.
We have a fantastic competitive and social program, starting off on the weekend of 26-27 September, with a double header of Middle Distance Championship races in Creswick’s notorious gold mining terrain. The midweek program, from 28-30 September, is packed with threeAustralian Schools Championships, associated public races, and social events showcasing Ballarat’s heritage – and a mystery or two to be solved! The finale is such a big occasion that the Victorian government was forced to declare a new public holiday! It kicks off on Thursday 1 October with the inaugural World Series StreetO Challenge and Dr Blake Tribute Dinner. This is followed by three National championships from 2-4 October – the Sprint, in the heart of Ballarat; the Long Distance, back at Creswick; and culminating in the excitement of the Relays, at Borhoney Ghurk.
All events are an easy drive from central Ballarat, and no more than 2 hours from Melbourne. Buses are provided to all events which are not served by local public transport. Accommodation will be at a premium, especially over the second weekend, which coincides with the AFL Grand Final – so start planning now.
Entries are now open on Eventor. First, please read the Event Schedule, which summarises the locations, entry fees, classes, extra services and other notes, for each event. Next, read the Entry Instructions – a step by step guide to de-mystify the process. Then, click on this link to select all of the Carnival events, and make your entry.
Discounted early bird entry is open from now until June 30. Standard entry opens July 1 and closes August 31. No late entries accepted.

The team will compete in a Sprint distance, Middle distance qualification and final, Long distance and Relay events during six days of competition.
The terrain is described as:
Mountain forest 700-1100 m above sea level. Mainly open pine and birch forest with a lot of small and bigger marshes. Lower areas and hillsides also with spruce. In general very good runnability and visibility. Some smaller areas with reduced runnability and visibility due to undergrowth, thicker forest and rocks. Varying technical challenges from areas with smooth contours and few details to areas with complex contours and many map details. Some old man-made features like reminders of old, small mountain farms. A few smaller areas with a lot of newer mountain cabins and gravel roads. Part of the terrain has cross-country ski tracks and alpine ski slopes.
Orienteering Australia has produced a Course Outline for a Level O Coach accreditation training course and an outline of the process for teachers (primary and secondary), sports coaches, community and recreational people to be able to obtain a Level O Coach Certificate.

Sad news from Orienteering Victoria:
Robyn Cameron died suddenly at home in Wodonga last Friday night (27th March), aged 71. Until the last few years when accumulated health issues intervened, Robyn and husband Hugh had been very active members of AWOC for over 25 years, initially living in Jindera (north of Albury), then Yackandandah and most recently Wodonga. Prior to this, Robyn & Hugh were prominent members of Central Coast Orienteers in NSW for many years.
A keen competitor, Robyn was a regular placegetter and sometimes winner of her age class in Australian & State orienteering championships. She represented Australia on several occasions in ANZ Challenges. In 1984 she won a day at O-ringen in Sweden, one of her most treasured orienteering memories.
Robyn’s course setting experience and expertise meant that she came to know Mt Pilot, Donkey Hill, Magenta Mine and Beechworth in the north-east of Victoria like her own backyard. In addition, she was a strong supporter of the women’s coaching program in Victoria.
Following a kidney transplant, Robyn won gold and silver medals in athletics and cycling at the 1999 World Transplant Games in Budapest, Hungary.
Robyn provided great support over the years to Hugh in his roles as OA President and IOF Vice President. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last year and Hugh will miss her immensely. Our deepest sympathy is extended to Hugh (hcameron@albury.net.au), children Simon and Melinda, and their partners and children. It was Robyn’s wish that there be no funeral.
